Mobility

You are planning to spend one or two semesters abroad, to complete individual modules (guest studies) or a Summer/Winter School at another Swiss or foreign university and would like to clarify which coursework can be recognized for your studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich (RWF UZH) or would like to have this coursework recognized.

Recognition for the Bachelor of Law UZH

Coursework completed abroad may be recognized for the Bachelor of Law UZH to the extent of a maximum of 90 ECTS credits if :

  • it is equivalent to a module of the Bachelor of Law UZH, or
  • a thematic allocation to the compulsory module "International Law/European Law" or to a core elective module (Foundations, OR/ZGB, Case Study in Private Law, Case Study in Public Law/Criminal Law) is possible, or
  • it can be integrated as a law or non-subject-related elective module.

Coursework completed within an exchange at another Swiss law faculty in the same language area may not be recognized as compulsory modules in the Bachelor of Law UZH.

Term papers or Bachelor's theses completed at another university are not recognized.

The recognition of modules from an exchange within Switzerland is based on recognition tables for the corresponding academic year, which are usually published in August.

Bachelor’s students who have obtained at least 150 ECTS credits at the Faculty of Law can take Master’s modules in advance during their exchange semester. The relevant forms can be found in the teaser on the right-hand side.

Recognition for the Master of Law UZH and Minor Law at Master level

Coursework at Master's level completed abroad may be recognized to the extent of a maximum of 45 ECTS credits for the Master of Law UZH Rechtswissenschaft resp. International and Comparative Law (ICL) and to the extent of a maximum of 15 ECTS credits for the Minor Law Master 30 ECTS, if

  • it is equivalent to a module of the Master of Law UZH,
  • a thematic allocation to a core elective module (or to the compulsory module "Case Study in Public Law") is possible, or
  • it can be integrated as a law or non-subject-related elective module (max. 6 ECTS credits non-subject-related) into the MLaw UZH Rechtswissenschaft,
  • it can be integrated into the MLaw ICL as a law elective module.

Master's theses completed at another university are not recognized.

Only coursework and internships completed in English may be recognized for the Master of Law UZH ICL

Procedure

The following four steps are necessary for the recognition of coursework completed during an exchange semester :

  1. Application: Submit the completed recognition form as a Word file to the Student Center via the contact form (section " Credit Transfer and Recognition"). The application will only be processed if the data is complete, otherwise it will be rejected for completion.
  2. Confirmation: The application is examined by the Student Center and the recognition of the modules is bindingly confirmed.
  3. Request for recognition: After the exchange stay, submit the confirmation again via the contact form. Tick the modules that are to be recognized. Attach the transcript of records from the host university as a PDF file.
  4. Notification of recognition: After the coursework has been recognized, you will receive a notification from the Student Center. The modules are then visible in the  module booking tool under the heading Academic Achievements.

Timing

It is recommended that you submit your application at least four weeks before your planned stay at the host university. The processing time is at least three weeks. Please consult the recognition tables when planning an exchange within Switzerland.

For students who have completed coursework during an exchange semester before fall semester 21, the recognition is based on the Guidelines Recognition BLaw (RLA BLaw) of 20 November 2012 or the Guidelines Recognition MLaw (RLA MLaw) of 6 May 2013.

Grade conversion

Coursework completed abroad is recognized with a grade, provided that the host university awards grades for it. If the coursework is not graded, it will be recorded as "passed". If the host university uses a different grading scale than UZH, the grade must be converted into the Swiss grading system, whereby the calculated result is always rounded to half grades.

The Student Center is responsible for the binding conversion. The grades listed on the transcript of the host university are decisive.

Only numerical values can be converted. Grading of performances by means of letters (e.g. "A - D") or additional terms ("Distinctions") must first be converted into a numerical value before being entered into the grade calculator. Example:
