Module Booking and Information on Examinations

Modules are booked via the student portal. The module booking corresponds to the exam registration. A distinction is made between two main module types: The non-space limited modules as well as the space-limited modules. The latter are divided in request and application modules. This distinction is indicated in the course catalog for each module and is decisive for the module booking procedure as well as for the applicable booking and cancellation deadlines. 

Booking modules

Modules are booked or requested from the app "Noted Items & Module booking". In order to do this, the modules must first be preregistered in the course catalog. The status of the booking or request can be seen in the app "My Modules". Requests can be withdrawn and bookings can be cancelled within the corresponding deadlines. In addition, requests can be prioritized differently and event bookings/preferences can be changed. The process is as follows:

Most of the modules offered at the Faculty of Law are non-space restricted modules (booking modules without space restriction). These modules are booked directly and students will automatically obtain a a study place place, provided the module booking rules (deadlines) are fulfilled. Sufficient places are available.

Some of the modules offered at the Faculty of Law are space restricted. These modules are marked as such in the course catalog.

Please note: Different booking and cancellation deadlines apply to space restricted modules.

Space restricted modules are divided in the following two types:

1. Request modules: During the request period, students submit a request via their studet portal. The modules are thereafter assigned according to the place allocation critera listed in the course catalogue. In case students do not obtain a study place in the corresponding module, they will automatically be put on a waiting list during the request period and will automatically move up during the waiting list progression period when it is their turn.

2. Application modules: During the request period, students must submit a request and will be required to submit additional documents, such as a letter of motivation. All information is available in the course catalog under "Notes". The modules are thereafter assigned by the chair responsible for the respective module. In case students do not obtain a study place in the corresponding module, they will automatically be put on a waiting list during the request period and will automatically move up during the waiting list progression period if they are the next person on the waiting list.

Please note: If students did not submit a module request during the request period, they will not be able to move up on the waiting list later on and therefore will not be able to book the module; as opposed to the request modules where students can rebook the module if there are enough study places available.

The following information can be found in the course catalog for each of the application modules:

• Booking and cancellation deadlines
• Procedure for application (under "Notes")
• Application deadlines
• Waiting list progression period
• Number of possible participants (capacity)
• Time ("space allocation at the latest") from which you definitely know whether you have received a place on the application module.

Mobility examinations are special examinations for exchange students only and are specified as such in the online course catalogue (E.g. "Mobility Exam Criminology (MLaw)" )

Oral mobility examinations take at least 15 minutes. A protocol is kept during the examination.

Important: Mobility examinations cannot be transferred to a degree at the Faculty of Law UZH. If you would like to enroll in the Bachelor of Law or Master of Law study program, please note that mobility examinations will not be accredited to your degree.

The grading scale at the University of Zurich goes from 1 to 6 and is arranged by half-grades, with 1 representing the lowest grade. Satisfactory performance corresponds to at least a 4.
