Overview
The course addresses the role of international organizations in public international law. It starts with a general part on the theory and law underlying international organizations. It then discusses the UN, the EU as an example of a supranational organization, regional organizations such as the OSCE and the Council of Europe, further the WTO, the Bretton Woods Institutions, and the role of NGOs.

Time
The course takes place every Wednesday from 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm during the fall semester, in person. No recording is available.

Course materials
The course is partly based on the following textbook: PHILIPPE SANDS / PIERRE KLEIN, Bowett’s Law of International Institutions, 6th ed., London 2009. Alternatives are for instance the textbooks of MATTHIAS RUFFERT / CHRISTIAN WALTER, Institutionalized International Law, Baden-Baden 2015 and of JAN KLABBERS, An Introduction to International Organizations Law, 4th ed., Cambridge 2022. Additional readings for each lecture as well as slides will be published on OLAT

Preparation
The students are expected to be prepared for each lecture and study the assignments and readings as set out in the syllabus.

Questions
Questions, including on the exam, should be asked during or after class, as appropriate. Questions asked by email will not be answered.

Exam
There will be a written exam (closed book).
