Miami Exchange Seminar 2026

The Miami Exchange Program enables students from both universities to gain an understanding of each other's legal cultures and norms through professional and social exchange. The Students deal in depth with comparative legal topics of international business law and present their findings in English. In addition, students will have an opportunity to meet with colleagues from the USA. 

The seminar takes place in two sequences. In a first sequence, students of the University of Zurich would travel to Miami in January/February 2026 accompanied by two Zurich professors for a three-day seminar. During this sequence, the students and professors will be guests of the Miami Law School. Each student will delve into a previously assigned topic and give a 30-minute presentation in Miami from Swiss and European perspective. Subsequently, an American student will present on the same topic from an American perspective. This will be followed by a discussion on this topic. 

In May 2026 (exact dates tbd) a delegation of six students and two faculty members from Miami Law School will travel to Zurich for a three-day seminar. Here the students will deal with other topics according to the same pattern as in Miami. During this sequence, the students and faculty members of Miami Law School will be guests of the University of Zurich. 

The three-day seminar usually begins with a professional exchange on the first day, followed by a day of social activities. The third day is again reserved for professional exchange. 

Bachelor Students

Students must give a presentation in English on two different topics in both Zurich and Miami during the seminar. Each presentation must be accompanied by a written paper of 10 pages. Active participation in the discussion is expected. For the part Zurich and the part Miami 6 ECTS Credits each will be awarded for the successful performance, which can be credited in the compulsory pool as a Bachelor's thesis (Miami Part, 6 ECTS) and in the elective pool (Private Law, Zurich Part, 6 ECTS). 

Master Students 

Students must give a presentation in English on two different topics in both Zurich and Miami during the seminar. Each presentation must be accompanied by a written paper of 10 pages. Active participation in the discussion is expected. For the Zurich part and the Miami part a total of 12 ECTS credits will be awarded for successful performance. These credits will be credited to the compulsory pool Master's thesis as one grade (12 ECTS). 

The topics are in the area of international business law. In particular, comparison should be made in the areas of corporate law and corporate governance, mergers & acquisitions, banking law, bankruptcy and reorganization law, commercial law, insurance law as well as competition and antitrust law 

The following topics are in focus:

International law governing international business, e.g.

• international regulation of financial transactions and institutions, 
• GATT/WTO,
• international treaty regimes relevant to particular aspects of commerce, 
• money laundering

Comparative business law

• corporate law and governance,
• data protection, 
• mergers and acquisitions, 
• joint venturing and other direct investment, 
• banking law, insurance law, 
• bankruptcy and insolvency, 
• commercial law, 
• securities law including private liability and public regulation, and 
• antitrust/competition law

As long as the students are enrolled at the University of Zurich, the seminar is open to both Master's and Bachelor's students in the higher semesters. Due to the limited number of participants, selection is essential. 

The course is aimed at students with above-average qualifications and a very good command of English who wish to work in the field of international business law in the long term.
