Legal History (BLaw)

Welcome to the course "Legal History" in the Bachelor of Law (BLaw) programme. As part of the assessment, this course takes place over two semesters. In the autumn semester, a lecture will be given by Prof. Dr. iur. Johannes Liebrecht, followed by the exercises (Übungen zur Rechtsgeschichte) for this module in the spring semester.

Further information on the course can be found on this website or on OLAT. The content accompanying the lecture will be posted in a timely manner. The lecture will also be accompanied by the Ius Teaching App.

The legal systems of the present day are the result of historical developments, some of which have taken place over a long period of time. For this reason alone, basic knowledge of legal history is indispensable for understanding current law. The most important aim of this lecture is to impart this basic knowledge of legal history.

The course is also intended to introduce participants to analysing legal history texts. In this way, the ability to recognise the interrelationships between the formation of norms, legal thinking and the changing historical environments should be trained.

The lecture is part of the compulsory module "Legal History" and is supplemented by the respective exercises in the spring semester. The module is completed by a written examination based on both courses.
