On 15 May 2025, a symposium was held at the Federal Ministry of Justice to mark the 60th anniversary of the Stock Corporation Act, chaired by Prof. Dr Julia Nicolussi and Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Susanne Kalss. After a ceremonial opening by Federal Minister Dr. Anna Sporrer, Susanne Kalss (WU Vienna) and Johannes Flume (University of Salzburg) gave a historical review of the economic and legal development of stock corporation law. Jens Koch (University of Cologne) spoke about current developments and the recent discussion on German stock corporation law. Peter Forstmoser (NKF / University of Zurich) outlined the differences to Swiss stock corporation law in his presentation.
The Stock Corporation Act is by no means the sole legal basis for the activities of stock corporations: Alexander Schopper (University of Innsbruck) and Mathias Potyka (BMJ) showed how many regulators and protagonists (company register, FMA, ECB, APAB, etc.) shape the legal framework of stock corporations today. In their presentations, Eveline Artmann (University of Linz) and Walter Bayer (emeritus professor at the University of Jena) made it clear that strengthening freedom of design can be an important piece of the puzzle in making public limited companies even more accessible to different types of companies. Angelika Sommer-Hemetsberger (OeKB) drew on practical experience to demonstrate how to deal effectively with uncertainties in the management board, while Martin Auer (University of Salzburg) outlined the limits of the management board in dealing with AI and sustainability.
Elke Heinrich-Pendl (SFU Vienna) and Stefan Fida (Grohs Hofer RA) analysed the role of the supervisory board as the only mandatory collegial body with the associated plurality, cooperation and control, as well as its ever-growing new tasks. Finally, Julia Nicolussi (University of Zurich) and Julia Told (University of Innsbruck) highlighted the effectiveness of corporate law and its further development through European standards, emphasising its importance for real economic life.
