Leander D. Loacker

 

Prof Loacker is Professor of Private and Commercial Law, Private International Law, International Civil Procedure and Comparative Law at the University of Zurich since 2018. Since the spring semester of 2023, he heads the Center for Innovation, Risk and Responsibility (CIRR), which he founded. 

By appointment decree of 3rd December 2021, Prof Loacker was appointed deputy judge at the Supreme Court of the Principality of Liechtenstein for a five-year term; he is a member of the first (civil) senate there.

Prof Loacker also acts as an arbitrator and provides expert opinions in the subject areas supervised by the chair.

As a representative of employers’ interests, he has been the Vice President of the Supervisory Board at the Stiftung VSAO since January 2020. As a member of the
Board of Trustees, Prof. Loacker has been active for the WWPK pension fund, since 2022. 

From October 2017 until March 2018, he was Deputy Professor of Civil Law, Commercial Law, Insurance Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law at the Goethe University Frankfurt/Germany.

From January 2016 to December 2021, Prof. Loacker was Of Counsel to a Zurich law firm.

From January 2016 until December 2019, he has been General Secretary to the "Transnational Reinsurance Law: PRICL" Global Research Project, which is sponsored by SNF, DFG und FWF and works in official cooperation with UNIDROIT Rome. From January 2020 to May 2022 he acted as a Member of the Principles Drafting Committee of this Research Project.

Furthermore, he serves as a Director at the Centre for Liechtenstein Law at the University of Zurich (ZLR) since July 2019. In addition to this, Prof Loacker is a lecturer in the course "Fachanwalt Arbeitsrecht" of the Swiss Bar Association and the certificate courses "Privatversicherungsrecht" at the HAVE Centre and "International Business Transactions & Technology Transfer" at the EIZ. For many years, he was also a lecturer for comparative law at the University of Hamburg and since its launch in 2020 member of the permanent team of authors of the blog of VersR Online. Since 2022 he is part of the editorial advisory board of the law journal VersR. Prof Loacker contributes his expertise in the area of international family law and the field of "genetics and law" as the co-leader to the interdisciplinary university research focus Human Reproduction Reloaded, founded in 2021. He was elected to the Board of the Swiss Association of International Law (SVIR) in 2023; He has been a member of the editorial board of the Swiss Review of International and European Law (SRIEL) since 2024.

Prior to his Professorship, he was Senior Research Fellow for Civil Law and Civil Procedure at the University of Zurich and for many years prior to that Research Associate at the University of Mannheim. For research purposes, he visited and stayed at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and the University of Manchester, where he earned his Master of Philosophy in Law (MPhil). He holds a doctorate in law (Dr iur) from the University of Innsbruck.

In 2016, he received the venia legendi in private law, private international law, insurance law, European law and comparative law by the University of Zurich.
